MERIDIAN: THE CITY WHERE EVERYONE IS A CRIMINAL

MERIDIAN: A CITY WHERE EVERYONE IS A CRIMINAL, a commercial thriller complete at 81,000 words, for your consideration.

In the prosperous city of Meridian, laws only matter when enforcing them doesn’t threaten the powerful. When city commissioner Jonah Mercer is murdered, private investigator Michael Burke expects a straightforward case—until it leads him to the unsolved killing of Jalen Carter, a bright student whose accusations against the son of Meridian’s most influential family were buried along with his body.

As Burke digs deeper, he uncovers a conspiracy spanning every institution: police suppressed evidence, a judge sealed records, and officials intervened to protect the Ashcroft name. Reporter Alex Hale, investigating Mercer’s murder from another angle, begins uncovering the same pattern. When their paths cross, they realize the truth: Jalen wasn’t murdered by Meridian. Meridian simply decided his murder didn’t matter enough to solve.

Now, people connected to the cover-up are dying. Burke assumes it’s the work of those keeping secrets buried—until he discovers a public defender, after years of watching the system protect the powerful and punish the powerless, has begun administering her own justice. Caught between those killing to preserve Meridian’s secrets and a vigilante killing those responsible, Burke and Alex must expose what happened to Jalen before they become the next targets—or before the public defender destroys the only people who can prove it.

MERIDIAN blends the tension of The Silence of the Lambs with the institutional intrigue of Dark Matter, exploring a city where corruption is the foundation, and the only question left is whether the truth can survive the cost of uncovering it.
